Laura Rangers have been collaborating with Sharks and Rays Australia (SARA) to survey sawfish since 2017. Through the years, they have learnt to and now can successfully tag and release sharks, rays and sawfish. Laura Rangers along side Rinyirru (Lakefield) Rangers were the first indigenous ranger group in Cape York Queensland to tag a sawfish without any professional supervision.
The Laura Rangers, Rinyirru Rangers, SARA and Lakefield Park Rangers also use the parks boats to travel up and down the rivers in Lakefield to sent receivers in the rivers. The receivers help to track the animals movements up and down the rivers that are tagged in the river such as bull sharks, rays and sawfish. There are at least 1-3 receivers in each of the 6 locations that are connected to the Normanby River where the bull sharks, rays and sawfish are.

These tags are the trackers on the animals that are tagged and once they swim past the receivers it is added to the data base. The rangers and SARA download the data from the receivers when they are out on Lakefield doing their sawfish surveys.
