Taking care of our Rock Art
Large animals such as cattle, pigs and wallabies can damage art work near ground level by rubbing on the images and stirring up dust. While the impacts animal and vegetation rubbing are immediately obvious, dust chemically binds to the ochres and will in time erase them. The Rangers have installed animal exclusion fences at three sites identified as significant by the Laura community. After advice from Andrew Thorn, a leading Australian rock art conservationist, the Rangers designed and constructed fences which protect the sites but are nearly invisible from the galleries.
